An Ode to Two Japanese Ladies

I just spent the last three and a half hours with our Japanese teacher (unfortunately Rod had to work overtime, so he couldn’t make it this time). I just want to say that she is a wonderful lady: a giggly, yet cultured women. In a way, she’s almost like a surrogate aunt. Very little of our time was spent in actual “Japanese study.” We talked about Japanese customs, about different accents in Japan, about how wonderful Rod is, about how to make a “proper” cup of Japanese tea, about difficulties in learning. Every lesson, she serves us uudon tea and chocolates. At the end of every lesson, she makes sure our pockets are stuffed with all the chocolates we didn’t eat. She has ordered pizza for us, photocopied close to a hundred pages of textbook material (each), bought us a bag to carry our Japanese material in (I guess she got sick of seeing our plastic bag!), given Rod a birthday present, and invited us to her second home.
On a sad note, a few minutes ago, our landlady dropped by and told us that she will be moving to Tokyo. Her son is starting a business, and, although it was a difficult decision for her to make, she told us, “he is my family, and he needs me.” But she also told us that even though she won’t be here in body, she has her cell phone, so all we need to do is call if we have a problem. She has been so good to us: she took a day off work so that she could help us move in, she took us out for dinner with her Christmas bonus, she randomly drops by to give us cakes, to make sure everything is okay, or just to chat.
A good writer would somehow find a common thread to tie these two paragraphs together and make a parallel to life. In reality, these ladies have nothing to do with each other, except that we know them, and we like them. We tip our hats to them.

Guys, I'm so glad you've been blessed with these ladies. Japanese women really do know how to make people feel loved, they are wonderful.

Hey Rod and Becky,

People can really make a difference with meaningful gestures like that. I'm glad those ladies are in your lives (even if one of them is moving away). Great to hear.
