Last night I went to/helped plan a baby shower for one of the Japanese staff at the school. To be honest, I was a little worried about it: I had asked before-hand if it was an acceptable thing to do, but in the process of planning I learned that nobody here actually knows what a baby shower is: the Aussies, the Scots, or the Japanese. In any case, the expectant mother showed up, as did (the female variety of) the foreign teachers and the Japanese staff, so right off the bat we had a makings for a shower. It turned out well: we played games, had prizes, ate way too much chocolate, chips, and other food, opened presents, and chatted. It struck me, though, how certain things are so universal: after every gift Sumi opened, the sounds of “oooh” and “awww” and “kawaii” (cute) could be heard. It might have been that nobody knew what a shower was, but they all knew how to act!
In other shower news…it rained today. It started out nice and sunny, so I did a load of laundry. The sun turned to a light flurry of snow, which turned to a rain. I just wanted to say that rain - at the just above freezing mark- is quite cold when it lands on feet that are only wearing nylons. In case you were wondering.

I wanna have a shower! A warm shower with smelly good soap!
At least you haven't had two sraight months of rain. Although I shouldn't complain, today is the third day in a row that we've had sun.
makes sense. i think its because babies are universal.
