Out of the Mouths

I have been working at a camp for the last few weeks, teaching mainly grade threes, but getting to interact with a variety of ages from K-6. It has been fascinating listening in on and being part of some of their conversations. Here is a sampling from one day.

Camper: I think your baby is dancing right now.
Me: Maybe, but it’s being pretty quiet.
Camper (in all seriousness): Yeah, dancing or listening to its iPod.

Camper: Rebecca, why are you standing there?
Me: I’m trying to think.
Camper (with great gusto): Are you going to be trying to think when your baby comes exploding out of you like a volcano?
Me: …..[speechless]

Camper 1 (after a lengthy, increasingly heated discussion on who in the class has traveled the most): My dad has been to more countries than anyone. He’s been to Afghanistan, he’s been to Texas….
Camper 2: Oh man, Texas is dangerous!

Camper: You look different than yesterday.
Me: (pretending I knew exactly what it was that made me ‘different’) : I do! Do you know why I look different?
Camper: You had your baby?

Isn't it wonderful, the amount of thought that goes into their questions...their thought process is completely amazing to me.
