Weekend Stay

As you may recall, several weeks ago, Rod and I spoiled ourselves to a weekend getaway.
We all - grandparents, grandkids and the parents in the middle (us) - enjoyed it so much, we decided to do it again.
Like last time, I met Rod's mom midway and she took the kids for the weekend. However, for Rod and I, this time was more like a "romantic weekend, minus the romantic." Instead of romance, getting away, and spoiling ourselves, we did an about turn and decided that our plan would be to stay home, work hard, and focus on house renovations. Round __ (?) of them. As Rod says "Baby steps....because a baby is coming."
There is a small little area above our kitchen that we have been using as storage; we call it the upstairs garage. (When we bought the house, it couldn't even be walked on for fear of falling through the floor into the kitchen below.) The plan is to turn this into a much more usable space, hopefully a bedroom of some kind.
And what a work weekend it turned out to be. Rod literally "raised the roof" and added an extra one to two feet of ceiling/ roof space, which makes a huge difference. He built an exterior wall, insulated and even got as far as vapour barrier.
To be fair, he had spent a few months of Saturdays up here several years ago as well as a few Saturdays in the past months, and so some of the preliminary work (things I can't even pretend to understand, but make it much more structurally sound) had already done been done. Even so, it is all very exciting. And me...I was "there:" cheering him on, bringing him coffee, and trying to be helpful.

You can see the "new" roofline in the back (lighter wood), and the "old" roof we were taking down in the front (darker wood).

The old roof is gone! It really gives a sense of much more space in the entire area. If you look closely, you can see in the far right corner the hole to the outside that our neighbour kept peeking into to see what in the world we were up to.

An exterior wall is up! No more neighbour peeking in!

Wall up, insulation in, and vapour barrier on!
You can also see the difference in roofline / ceiling space on the right side.

And then....because we have wonderful people in our lives, we came downstairs from a long day of work, and were met with this beautiful sight.

A romantic dinner.
Deliciousness!

A good, full weekend.

Yes, making the coffee and keeping the men well-fed it an important part of renovating! I was telling someone recently how "we" had put an addition on the front of our house, and he laughed and asked how much I had actually done. I said, "I made coffee, cooked bacon & other delicious foods, and without that, they wouldn't have the energy to keep working!" I don't think he quite knew what to say to that.
Hope your renos keep going smoothly!
