Things That Made Me Happy This Week:
-waking up to a dusting off snow on the ground
-finding apples on sale (only 58 yen, as opposed to the usual of anywhere from 98 to 158 yen)
-making apple crisp (and eating it!)
-heated toilet seats
-our landlady: I seriously think we have the best landlady in the world! She took time off work to help us move in with her truck, she brought us cake when she came back from holidays, last week she randomly dropped by with some specialty tarts, and this week, with her bonus, she treated us to dinner!
-being able to try to learn Japanese and the generosity of our teacher!
-conversations with friends and family
-packages and letters in the mail
-biking everywhere! (although, sometimes in this weather it's a bit "fresh")
-having my bike parked right where I left it!
Things That Made Me Sad This Week
-missing the family Christmas gatherings
-seeing the commercialism of Christmas, but not even a trace of the real meaning of it
-not being able to celebrate my brother's birthday with him
-being too far away to have a cup of tea and a nice long talk with my mama
-the fact that our heater is on the fritz

Heated toilet seats are crazy. Today I went to a public bathroom and they didn't even have toilets! Just fancy porceline holes in the floor! I have also heard that you can get 'massaging/vibrating' toilet seats. Is this true?
Not that I know of...but wouldn't that be nice?! The strange thing is that the majority of the toilets are holes in the ground, but every once in a while you find this space age one: heated seat, bidet, alarm system...what a treat!
Just curious about the alarm on the toilet seat... is that so no one steals it or to let you know when your time is up?? I don't know what a bidet is?!
The alarms are to call security if you are in trouble (being attacked, fallen and can't get up, out of toilet paper...) My first experience with toilet alarms was at NOVA Osaka during orientation. I was told to make sure that I didn't press the orange button or security would come because it was an alarm. Of course while playing with other buttons I pressed the bidet and a warm stream of water began to spray up my backside. It was a problem because I couldn't figure out how to turn it off... after I sat there for about five minutes I realized that the only option I had left was to try the orange button - I figured I couldn't sit there all night!! It turned out that the alarm was another orange button though, not the one I pushed. Boy, was that an uncomfortable few minutes!
Leave it to you to press all the buttons... except I'm not sure who I'm talking to. I'd assume Rod, but since 'you' were sitting, I'd have to say it was Bec... tough call though, you guys never sign your individual names. (I could easily see Rod pushing the buttons - but I'm not sure about Bec).
Yeah, I admit, it was me (Rod). I have to be careful about pressing buttons that have only Kanji on them (it's all squiggles and lines to me).
whew... that's a relief. I'd hate to be bad mouthing Bec, especially since I don't know her all that well.
Okay, enough blogging for tonight - who knew this could be so habit forming?!
