Exhibit 1) I saw a lady I recognized in the grocery store. I waved, and as she came up to me she said “You never look old enough to be grocery shopping.”
Ummmm…thanks?? I didn’t realize there is an age limit for grocery shopping.
Exhibit 2) I went to Sears to return our toaster oven, after calling, explaining it was a wedding gift and we therefore had no receipt, and verifying it could be returned hassle free. I went to the sales representative and she said “Ohhh! You’re the little girl who called earlier!”
Yes, and that makes my husband a...what?... for marrying me.
Exhibit 3) I was grocery shopping again this morning and a very senior citizen – about 4 inches shorter than me, and weighing about 15 pounds less than me squeezed my lower arm and said “Well you’re a tiny little thing. You’re cute.”
Thanks - you too??
How do I respond to these things? Should I be offended? Or flattered? I seriously don’t know what to think half the time.

Regarding number 3, if it was Japan she would say, "You are Cutie!"
At least people don't call you 'old' as I am.... all too frequently!!
I think you might as well get used to it - with those cheeks, height and cute curls, you will always be adorably young looking and cute. At work we have a very petite senior who is still adorable. At least when you are sixty, you'll only look 40 - not a bad trade off for a few inappropriate comments now, I'd say.
