My coworkers think I'm Amish

by Rod

For two months I have been working at a construction company here in Kingston. To tell the truth, I don't really "fit in" with the other guys. Although they respect me, they don't understand me. They tend to smoke weed on their breaks, swear liberally, have partner's or live-ins instead of wives, and have the kind of world views that make me cringe. They know that I am a Christian, that I actually like working, don't smoke or drink, stay away from their hard core screaming rock music and am generally the pacifist of the workplace. They have the big screen televisions, the latest video game systems and all the toys that they want, and so you should have seen the look on their faces when I told them I didn't have a television. The immediate question was: What DO you do for fun??
Recently, as one of them was watching me eat my massive slices of twelve grain homemade bread something inside him finally clicked, and he came to the natural conclusion: I must be Amish.

Knowing how you love to eat - I would have assumed that you spend all your money on food...who needs a television when you've got food in the fridge.

ohhh why not tell them, you've been facinated with the fridge light and discovering whether or not it stays on after you close the door.

Mmm... food is good...

Lately my co-workers have been participating in a lot of horse-play, some of which has included screwing and or taping people and possessions to the wall, playfighting, and flinging drywall compound across the room at eachother. Somehow things always seem to escalate even further, which is one of the reasons that I am staying away from all the hubbub. I'll just sit and eat my fresh sandwich, thanks very much.

I'd hate to be the one footing the bill for that horse play...
