Precious Moments

Last Friday was my last day of practicum. I thoroughly enjoyed my time learning from and with the kids and my associate teacher. It couldn’t have been a better time of learning. I truly got to know and appreciate, at least on some level, the kids in the class and many of their struggles. Some days they made my heart melt, some days they made my blood boil, and some days it was a combination of both. But they were my kids. I heard it said today that students have two questions for their teacher: 1) Do you like me? And 2) Can you teach me? I think that very often, the teacher in some way, shape or form, has similar questions for the students: 1) Do you like me? And 2) Will you let me teach you?
I did/do, anyway.

On my last day, I was given several cards from the students, one from a school to community student (low intellectual ability). It read:
Dear Ms S
Hello, I will miss me and school will not be cool without you.
Rose are red / Voits are Blue / And you Rock / And you are the Best.

The ultimate in compliments came when another student gave me a gift bag, held together in the corners by tape. Inside was a yellow HB pencil, decorated with orange, purple, and yellow pipe-cleaners and red, purple and blue feathers poking out the top. Imagine it, if you can. There was also a Babysitter’s Club book (#58: Karen’s Skiing Trip), slightly used, with her name scratched out, and mine added in. I thanked her profusely and then she said “There’s more!” I looked, and sure enough, on the bottom was a broken candy cane, a Barbie lollipop, a used highlighter, and a used Mr. Sketch marker.
All the things she loved.
The widow’s two mites, truly.

That poem is a work of art.

What a touching entry.
