A few Scattered Thoughts…

Yesterday was probably the worst day of any of my practicum experiences. A student made me cry by telling me what he really thought of me (but I didn’t let him see the tears). It was discouraging to hear, especially on top of already shaky confidence in my ability to teach this level well.
Today was much better, and in the words of my associate we could have cried but we chose to laugh instead. It’s generally a much better principle to follow.

Two events of today:
The following conversation took place between a student and I, as he was sitting at his desk, staring at the wall, waiting for others to finish their math test.
Me: Do you have a book you could read?
Him: No.
Me, knowing the answer full well since I give it out tomorrow.: Do you have a history test you could study for?
Him: Yes.
Me: I would study for that if I were you.
Him: Whatever. I’m going to get an F.
Me, raising my eyebrows, slightly, not seeing where the “whatever” fits in that sentence: I would study for that if I were you.
Him: It doesn’t matter. You’re going to pass me through anyway. I’m not going to fail.

He knows the system a little too well, I would say.

My associate and I had a few minutes of breathing time at the end of day. He looked at me and said: “How many of these kids are emotionally, cognitively and behaviourally at grade level?” We both knew the numbers would be discouragingly low. So, we sat and looked at the class, counting on our fingers.
Out of 23, our grand total of grade level students: 7.

Has your practicum redeemed itself since this day? I hope so! I feel sad for your class... :(
If it makes you feel better, I'm going to tell you what I really think of you too: I think you're the bestest! Here's to the last two weeks of regular prac having more of those "things that make you smile" kind of days! xxxxxx
