Yesterday, as some people may recall, was Valentine's Day, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that several students brought in some "sweet treats:" candies, cupcakes, and notes. One of my students -slightly tough guy, very small, hard working, and learning disabled (he struggles to read at a kindergarten level) -brought in a beautiful looking heart-shaped cake, decorated with cinnamon hearts. I complimented him on it, and told him I was very much looking forward to taking part in it.
In the afternoon, we had a chance to partake. It was a rather small cake, which needed to be divided into 24 pieces, if the associate teacher and I were to have a piece. I thought it best to make 22 pieces, to make them a reasonable size. The young sir delivered each piece to his classmates, and at the end, there were two (very)small pieces left. I put them together, to make one piece and said, "Here you go, enjoy!"
"No," was his reply.
"Sure," I told him, "you brought the cake in, enjoy it."
"No, he answered, you and Mr. L need a piece."
It was a firm, gentle answer, one that I tried to argue with but in the end, he was the only person who didn't get a piece. And he was more than fine with that.
I will admit, it brought tears to my eyes. I'm such a sap.
